Team Super Scout Specialist's 1977 ScoutII w/crew
Full Story: Maxxis Pa On/Offroad Rally 2003
Fellow Binders,
Now that the rally is history, and my adrenalin levels have returned to an almost normal state, I will give you a day by day synopsis of the rally.
The Team Super Scout, consisted of John Glancy and Ray Cass, as the team drivers. Dennis Petterson, Jeff Jamison, and Andy Margush were our pit crew. Also Mike Eppinger and Dan Maciejczyk were a crucial part of the support team.
Day 1
The race started in Portage, PA. The competitors were spaced at 1 minute intervals. Team Super Scout started in the 18th position. The first clue was to go to Sassy's for breakfast. When we arrived at Sassy's we were greeted with a breakfast of boiled cabbage, flat bread filled with cheese, and a Coke to wash it down. The plate had to be clean and the Coke finished to get the next clue. The next clue lead us to the incline plane in Johnstown, Pa. We were to get a photo from the top of the mountain of the Johnstown War Memorial and show it to an old man. You had to address him as Pappy and ask him for the next clue. This was giving some of the competitors trouble as they were looking for a marble memorial and the War Memorial is a building in which the Johnstown Chiefs hockey team plays. (Remember the movie "Slap Shot")
Once we had identified the building we were given our next clue that lead us to a place called Top of the World. This required a 3 mile climb of a snow covered mountain. The first 2.5 miles were not bad, but when we neared the summit, the snow was 30"+. There were trucks stuck everywhere. The snow had a thick crust, and when you broke though, it sat the trucks on the frame. At this check point you had to take a scenic picture of a sponsor's banner with the view in the background. When your Polaroid finished developing, the next clue was given. Team Super Scout was descending the hill, when about 3/4 of the way down we encountered 5 vehicles on their way up. With the lead truck taking most of the time delay to put on tire chains! This group refused to yield the right of way to down hill trucks. This put our team 45 minutes behind the leaders.
The next stop was Rausch Creek Motorsports Park, located North of Harrisburg, PA. It was about a 2 hour road race to the park. (Cannonball Run) There were many who broke the posted speed limit that day! After arriving at Rausch Creek you had to complete a 3 mile off-road circuit through the woods. Appr
